Green onyx is a banded variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) displaying parallel layers of green and lighter tones; in gem trade the term “onyx” is also applied to banded calcite (often called onyx marble), so green onyx can be either a true silica-based onyx or a calcite-based material. The green color may be natural—from mineral inclusions such as chlorite or celadonite—or achieved by dyeing. It forms through silica- or carbonate-rich fluids filling cavities and layering over time to produce the characteristic bands, and commercially sourced material comes from places like India, Brazil, Pakistan, Mexico, and parts of Africa, with dyed material widely produced as well.

Metaphysically, green onyx is associated with growth, renewal, and emotional strength, often linked to the heart chakra and used to encourage compassion, patience, and inner balance. It is considered grounding and stabilizing, helping to dispel negative energy, support recovery from emotional stress, and foster resilience and steady progress toward personal goals.
