This is a large and impressive Ethiopian Orthodox Triptych hand-carved from solid wood and adorned with traditional hand-painted iconography. This specific piece features a tiered, architectural frame and folding side doors that open to reveal multiple sacred scenes.
Artistic Features:
- Top Finial & Upper Panel: The peak of the icon features a winged Seraphim presiding over a poignant depiction of the Crucifixion of Jesus, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John.
- Central Main Panel: Below the Crucifixion, the central panel is divided into two registers. The top shows Saint George on his white horse slaying the dragon, while the bottom register depicts a biblical scene featuring three figures in traditional robes.
- Folding Side Doors (Wings): The interior of the two hinged doors features four standing Archangels (two on each side) holding ceremonial swords, serving as guardians of the central holy scenes.
- Exterior Craftsmanship: When closed, the wooden doors feature a large, hand-carved diamond geometric pattern. The entire frame has a dark, rich finish that complements the high-saturation pigments of the paintings.
