John Rackham earned his nickname "Calico Jack" from his preference for wearing fine calico cotton clothing – a fabric typically used for trade with natives in the New World . While pirate captains often favoured silks and velvets, Rackham's taste for colourful Indian cotton set him apart . His flamboyant style was worthy of the common pirate stereotype and contributed to his enduring image as a dashing rogue of the seas .

✅ 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 ⚓:

Rackham's career began under the notorious pirate Charles Vane :

Quartermaster on Vane's ship – Served as second-in-command

The mutiny (November 1718) – When Vane refused to attack a French man-of-war, Rackham raised objections and organised a crew vote 

Elected captain – Vane was relieved of command; Rackham took over 

"Democracy at sea" – Pirate crews voted for their captains, and Rackham won the crew's loyalty 

✅ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞'𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐨𝐧 🕊️:

After taking command, Rackham sailed to Nassau and accepted a royal pardon from Governor Woodes Rogers in 1719, claiming he had been forced into piracy by Charles Vane . However:

He couldn't settle on land – Ran out of money and returned to piracy 

Stole a sloop from Nassau harbour – August 1720 

Proclamation issued – Governor Rogers declared Rackham and his crew pirates 

✅ "𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫" 👩‍✈️:

Rackham's most famous crew members were women disguised as men:

Anne Bonny – An Irish woman who had left her husband for Rackham; the two became lovers in Nassau 

Mary Read – Born in England, brought up as a boy, served in the Royal Navy disguised as a man, joined Rackham's crew when his ship captured her vessel 

The secret was out – Both women fought alongside the men, wielding pistols and cutlasses 

"If you had fought like a man..." – Bonny's famous words to Rackham at his execution

Surrender and capture – Rackham was arrested and put on trial in Jamaica
