The Photograph is an image taken from atop a building (likely the building housing the Anthony Studio) looking down on the Funeral procession. An Artillery Regiment (part of the Funeral Procession) can be seen advancing along the left hand side of Broadway. Masses of spectators crowd the sidewalk - others peer from the windows of the multi story buildings that line the Great White Way. The buildings are draped in black and flag design bunting. In this Photograph, the window of Cornelius Van Schaak Roosevelt’s home is closed and the children that would shortly appear in that window are nowhere to be seen.
The entire image has a dank and gloomy feel even though the street is bathed in sunlight - scattered umbrellas can be seen among the spectators. This Image is nearly identical to the Photograph accepted by historians and scholars as capturing a “moment in time” when the lives of two of the greatest Republican Presidents of the United States intersected - a moment forever seared into the mind of President Theodore Roosevelt as an experience that was instrumental in the development of his young psyche. Here Teddy and Elliot Roosevelt do NOT appear in the window from which they will shortly watch the Procession pass by on the street below.
This outstanding and important Image carries the label of E. & H. T. Anthony and was originally published as part of "Anthony’s Instantaneous Views” series. It is titled on the affixed label on the verso “No. 4595 / The Funeral of President Lincoln, April 25th, 1865”. The Photos are mounted on a flat, square corner card mount that measures approx. 6 ¾” by 3 1/4” and the stereo effect is vivid when viewed through a stereoscope. The almost identical Stereoview Photograph that pictures the Roosevelt children is Number 4596 in this same series.
This wonderful and emotionally moving Stereoview Photograph is in excellent condition - the focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. The Photographs are generally clean and crisp with just some loght foxing to the area of the sky in both Photos and the card mount has some light edge wear and light soiling.
An exceptionally rare and important, original 1865 Stereo Photograph that captures the scene of Lincoln’s Funeral Procession a short time before an important and gripping Moment in American History - the moment of contact between the young Theodore Roosevelt and his political and historical hero Abraham Lincoln - and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
PLEASE NOTE: See this seller’s other listings for a Stereoview of Lincoln’s Funeral Procession taken from the same perspective shortly after this Image was taken with Teddy and Elliot Roosevelt appearing at the window above Broadway that is also being offered for sale this week on eBay!
