The Photograph is an image originally taken from atop a building (likely the building housing the E. & H. T. Anthony Studio) looking down on the Funeral procession. There are marching soldiers as far as the camera can see along Broadway. Masses of spectators crowd the sidewalk - others peer from the windows of the multi story buildings that line the Great White Way - even the rooftops are crowded with citizens paying their respects to the martyred President. The buildings are draped in black and flag design bunting.
The entire image has a dank and gloomy feel even though the street is bathed in sunlight - scattered umbrellas can be seen on the rooftops and in the crowd being used as protection from the sun. The “ghost” of a very large American Flag waves above the building in the center of the image (the movement of the flag in the wind likely created this eerie effect). One can sense that the street is silent except for the muffled sound of those who weep in sorrow.
This outstanding and important Image is usually found carrying the label of E. & H. T. Anthony and titled “The Funeral of President Lincoln, New-York, April 25, 1865”. Here, the Image is published as part of a series titled “American Views” and the Stereoview does not carry a photographer’s or publisher’s mark. The Photos are mounted on the original, yellow colored, card mount that measures approx. 6 3/4” by 3 ½”.
This important and moving, Historical Stereoview is in excellent condition - the focus is sharp and the contrast and the tonality rich and warm. The Images are clean and crisp as is the card mount (see the scans below).
A very rare and historically important, original 1865 Stereo Photograph of this gripping Moment in American History and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
