Antique Georgian Glass Rummer with Panel Cut Bowl & Pedestal Stem, c1830

A rummer is a large, sturdy drinking glass featuring a capacious bowl, a short stem, and a wide, stable foot. Despite the name, it is typically unrelated to the spirit rum; its name derives from the German and Dutch word Roemer, meaning a Roman or Rhenish glass of the 15^th century. By the late 18th century, British and Irish glassmakers developed clear, heavy flint-glass rummers with bucket or ovoid bowls. Used historically for heavy ales, porter, or wine rather than rum, though they were occasionally used for punch or grog.

This glass features a distinctive petal or slice cut pattern on the rounded funnel-shaped bowl. The bowl 8 panels cut into the glass, one has been over-shot by the artisan cutter, leaving this very human mistake behind. It has a substantial baluster knop stem resting on a wide, sturdy circular foot. This style was common to the late Georgian and Victorian periods (circa 1800–1860). The base has a partially polished pontil mark.

The rummer measures approx. 14cm tall with a rim diameter of 8.4cm and a base, it has a capacity of 260mls.
