Thomas Mitchell Morris was born on 16 June 1821 in St Andrews, Fife – the "home of golf" . He began playing golf by age 10, knocking wine-bottle corks pierced with nails around the streets with a homemade club in informal matches known as "sollybodkins" . By age 14, he was apprenticed to Allan Robertson, the world's first professional golfer .
The Invincibles:
From the early 1840s, Robertson and Morris partnered in challenge matches and became known as "The Invincibles" – it was said they never lost a team match played on even terms . By his early 20s, Morris was the second-best player in St Andrews, close to Robertson in skill, and even won an informal match from him over the Old Course in 1843 .

Return to St Andrews:
In 1864, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club formally passed a motion calling for Morris's rehiring . He returned in 1865 as Keeper of the Green at a salary of £50 per year . He widened fairways, enlarged greens, built two new greens (holes 1 and 18), and applied the greenkeeping techniques he had developed at Prestwick . He stayed in the post until 1903 – a total of 39 years – and was kept on afterwards at full salary .
