An original early Victorian stereoview photograph by the celebrated Scottish photographer H. Herning , showing Balmoral Castle from the south.
The reverse carries its original printed identification label:
“Balmoral Castle from the S.
No. 131.”
Number 131 is recorded in H. Herning ’s stereoview catalogue as “Balmoral Castle, from S.” and later as “Balmoral Castle – South Front.”
An especially appealing scene, with two estate workers, a white horse and agricultural machinery photographed in the field in front of the castle. These human and working-life details add considerable character and historical interest.
Two matching sepia albumen photographs are mounted on a distinctive yellow card. A partially legible oval embossed photographer or retailer’s mark is present on the right side of the mount.
Approximate overall size: 18 x 9 cm.
Antique condition with considerable age-related fading, scattered marks and spotting to the photographs, surface wear, soiling and rubbing around the mount edges. The scene nevertheless remains clearly identifiable, with the castle, horse and workers all visible. Please inspect all photographs carefully for the exact condition.
A genuine early stereoscopic view associated with one of Scotland’s most important pioneering photographers, combining royal, architectural, agricultural and social-history interest.
