The Edison Fireside was introduced in 1909. The Model A, which is this machine, came with a 2 and 4 minute speed option, whereas the model B was only a 4 minute Nitrocellulose (Amberol) player. 

Looking back to this time, it is a little difficult to see why the Fireside failed to oust the Standard entirely, as many of the parts  were interchangeable. The Fireside was more compact than the Standard and had several improved features. The new style clip from body to cover was peculiar to this machine. The motor was identical to the Standard with the exception of the 2nd gear with the 1st pinion, the barrel (bull) gear and the mainspring. Perhaps the Fireside never replaced the Standard because the Standard was the best seller of the Edison range, and people were inclined to buy what has been proved in use and what their friends owned. This theory could also explain why only Models A and B were produced, and far less made than any other commercially produced Edison cylinder players, barring the Opera and Idelia. 

THIS MACHINE DETAILS:

The horn is an original 14" witches hat horn. The cabinet has been restored. The motor has been de-greased, and a new belt provided. The cabinet is quarter-sawn oak w/flakes.

Crank is original. Nickel plating on the mandrel in  good shape. The reproducer had to be filed slightly since it swelled over the past century and wouldn't fit correctly on the carriage assembly. upper motor assembly gear cover is present; usually missing on Firesides. The two-Four minute gear transition system works perfectly, however only 2 min. cylinders can be played with the Model C reproducer.

Machine dimensions are 11 inches tall. Base is 11-3/4" x 9-1/4 in.

Motor works fine. Machine is sold as is.
