The Great Northern Railway was incorporated in 1846 and quickly built or took over lines around the route between London & York. Early luggage destination labels were large (approx.. 102mm x 45mm- 4” x 1 ¾”) but settled down to around 73mm x 42mm, with the stock code 18. They also had printing dates & other information from around 1907, many with printers initials where sub contracted out, such as W. & S. Ltd - Waterlow & Sons, H-C. Co./Ltd. or H-C.G - Haycock-Cadle (& Graham).  

This label measures approx. 3 1/8" X 1 ½” (83mm X 38mm)

Pre-grouping railway labels from England, Wales & Scotland date from before January 1923, when the GWR became larger and the LMS, LNER & SR were formed from an amalgamation of Companies in their area of operation. In turn these Companies were nationalised on 1st January 1948 to form British Railways.  Stock codes may be shown, sometimes the quantity printed and if a date is shown, eg: 2-98, 1/23, it signifies the month & year of printing or if 16-7-95, the day also, in the 19th or 20th century

All Items are pre-owned Originals, unless otherwise stated, and may also have minor imperfections including edge tears, mounting marks, or creases not mentioned, commensurate with their age/use.

Postage and packing is shown separately for the U.K. and selected Worldwide destinations.

Insured & tracked delivery must be selected for all items over £20

Postage charges should combine when checking out, but if not, please await combined invoice for multiple items, to save on postage. Note that prices also include packing materials, ebay postage fees & international & exchange rate fees where appropriate. Combined postage cannot be given after payment

Payment is due immediately, and must be completed within 3 days.  If you are likely to be away, or want to carry over items up to a maximum of 8 days, please contact me prior to the end of the auction.

All items are normally sent as soon as possible, and within 4 working days, following receipt of cleared funds, packed suitably to withstand the normal rigours of the postal system.

Items are normally sent through the Royal Mail, either signed for, tracked or with a certificate of posting obtained, dependent on the postage band paid for. 

Please contact me first if an item is not received within the stipulated time, so that the matter can be addressed and taken up with the Carrier. Second class postage can often take two weeks, or more, to arrive and is not guaranteed. First class or tracked postage is advised

Overseas buyers are responsible for any Customs matters, tax & import charges - Taxes or charges paid by e bay will be added to the invoice
