Stunning collection of classical Greek and Roman architectural reconstruction reproduced in heliogravure. The selections show a true care and attention to detail in bringing these design elements back to life and the renderings are simply splendid.
The "Table explicative des planches" is attributed to Georges Daumet. The wonderful plates were made by the firm Heliogravure Chauvet, and hand-printed by Alfred Porcabeuf of Paris, on the traditional hand press. Aquatint is one of the most brilliant and faithful monochrome reproductive technique known in the history of printing. It provides reproductions of paintings and of photographs with an accuracy of detail and depth of tone unlikely to be surpassed by any other technique. Among the first to experiment with this method was Fox Talbot (England, during the 1850s), but it was around 1880 that there began the commercial development of this technique.
Hector-Jean-Baptiste d'Espouy (1854-1928) was a French painter and architect, professor of ornamental design at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
