Name:  NWA 14558

Classification: Winonaite

Weight:   14.64g

Description:  Meteorite as presented by the finders

Provenance:  I am the main mass holder so you have perfect provenance.

Process:  Unprocessed

Collector's Notes:  This has been some very interesting Winonaite material.  PAC group meteorite are thermally altered enough that recrystallization and "flowing" started but was incomplete.  Cutting and working these pieces I have seen a wide variety of stages including some remnant chondrules in a few pieces.  The free metal is the area that I think this is most obvious to collectors.  In the material it ranges from evenly dispersed fine grains to small channels of iron melt all the way to large thick rivers of free metal.  There are also some pieces that have lost all the free metal with recrystallized components.  It is very interesting to me thinking about how if the parent body had contiued to grow and heat the metal would have continued to flow toward the proto-planet's center eventually formaing a core.

This unprocessed meteorite show an amazing display of nickle-iron which had started to flow.  Then, while on Earth, the sandy desert wind wore down much of the softer chondritic matrix.  This leaves us with a beautiful form which conveys the "awe" of this rare group.

Class information:  Winonaites are a rare class of primitive achondrites that preserve a unique blend of primitive and differentiated characteristics. Composed of olivine, pyroxene, metal, and sulfides, they formed on a parent body that experienced enough heating to undergo partial melting, but not enough to completely separate into a distinct crust, mantle, and core. As a result, winonaites provide a rare glimpse into the early stages of planetary differentiation, capturing a transitional phase between primitive chondritic material and fully evolved planetary bodies. Their rarity and unusual history make them scientifically important for understanding how the first asteroids evolved in the young Solar System.
