COMPOSITION PRESENTANT APHRODITE ET HERMES
Composition romaine en terre cuite présentant un couple, probablement Aphrodite et Hermès.
Ils sont présentés nus, chacune légèrement déhanchés. Aphrodite a les cheveux bouclés coiffés en arrière, maintenus par une coiffe en diadème. Hermès porte une cape qui lui couvre les épaules, il tient un bâton dans la main gauche, possiblement un caducée dont la partie supérieure est manquante. Aphrodite tient une grande palme dans la main droite, le bras appuyé sur un jeune enfant, possiblement hermaphrodite, le fruit de leur union.
Empire romain provincial, bassin méditerranéen, 1er / 3ème siècle après J.-C.
Très bon état de conservation - aucune restauration
Dimensions : hauteur 15,6 cm - largeur 9,8 cm
Provenance : Collection privée néerlandaise, constituée entre 1970 et 1974 par un collectionneur travaillant pour le ministère néerlandais des Affaires étrangères et en poste en Afrique du Nord.
Group of deities depicting Aphrodite and Hermes
Roman terracotta composition depicting a couple, likely Aphrodite and Hermes.
They are shown nude, each with a slight shift in weight (contrapposto). Aphrodite has curly hair swept back and secured by a diadem-style headdress. Hermes wears a cape covering his shoulders and holds a staff in his left hand—possibly a caduceus with the upper section missing. Aphrodite holds a large palm frond in her right hand, resting her arm on a young child—possibly Hermaphroditus—the offspring of their union.
Provincial Roman Empire, Mediterranean region, 1st–3rd century AD.
Excellent state of preservation – no restoration.
Dimensions: height 15.6 cm – width 9.8 cm.
Provenance: Dutch private collection, assembled between 1970 and 1974 by a collector working for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs while stationed in North Africa.
