The cuspinique culture developed around 1500 to 500 BC along the northern-central arid coast of Peru, and influenced the later Chavin culture; their material culture has been found as far as the southern highlands, their pottery is mainly dark in colour, polished, stirrup-spout bottles moulded into forms of animals, humans, and composite mythical beings, their iconography was heavily influenced on themes of predation, supernatural fangs, and combined attributes of felines, snakes, and caimans.
