Rare original antique “SLOW CHILDREN PLAYING” municipal road sign featuring an early running-schoolboy graphic.

This is a heavy-gauge stamped steel sign with deeply embossed lettering, raised double-line border and an embossed child wearing an old-fashioned cap and knicker-style clothing. It is not a lightweight modern aluminum reproduction.

The sign measures approximately 23½ inches tall by 17½ inches wide, commonly referred to as the nominal 24 × 18-inch size.

Based on its heavy steel construction, embossed design, typography and early running-child illustration, this sign is believed to date from the early 20th century. No manufacturer’s name or exact date is visible, so the age is an informed attribution and is not guaranteed.

The bold yellow and black painted finish remains visually striking. The unusual early child graphic, large size and genuine roadside patina make this an excellent piece for a serious road-sign collection, transportation display, garage, restaurant, industrial loft or vintage advertising collection.

CONDITION:

The sign remains in original, unrestored condition and displays substantial authentic age and use.

Condition includes:

• Horizontal crease and dent across the center

• General waviness and slight warping

• Scratches, scuffs and surface marks

• Areas of paint loss

• Oxidation and scattered surface rust

• Rust around the mounting holes

• Bends and wear along the outer edges

• Dirt, staining and aged patina

Despite the wear, the embossed wording and running-child graphic remain clear, and the original yellow and black coloring displays very well.
