This is an octagonal, rounded, openwork tsuba (sword guard) made of iron.
It appears to be a fairly old item.

The octagonal, rounded outline, the inside of the openwork, and the area around the tang hole all exhibit a relatively straightforward, handcrafted feel. In particular, the adjustment marks around the tang hole are not overly mechanically precise, and the base metal appears firmer than the rough, grainy texture typical of cast iron.
