Name:  NWA 869

Classification: L3-6

Weight:   279.5g

Description:  Nice handful with remaining fusion crust and a polished face showing many well defined chondrules and free metal blebs.

Provenance:  I directly imported the stones.  Since "intruders" are occasionally found in the lots I then inspect each stone to be sure it has consistent features as described in the metbul and as shown in other known specimens.

Process:  Cut and polished using distilled water.

Collector's notes: This is a choice specimen for a brecciated L type meteorite, having a big centerpiece met, or a big handful of space for when you go out stargazing.

Classification information:  This very large OC find is one of my favorite meteorites.  There has been a lot of this material found which has helped to keep it affordable.  It is very complex with a wide variety of features and clasts.  The metbul classification does not even mention all that was subsequently learned from this find so I encourage additional research.  There are even occasional CM clasts found in this mix.  It is really satisfying to inspect a piece like this while thinking of the series impact series that lead to its formation.

Class information:  L3-6 meteorites are ordinary chondrites of the L (low-iron) group that display a full spectrum of thermal metamorphism, from the most primitive type 3 through the highly equilibrated type 6. They typically contain 20-25% total iron (less metallic Fe-Ni than H chondrites) and show how parent-body heating altered their textures and mineral chemistry. At the L3 end, chondrules are fresh, sharply defined, and chemically diverse, recording nebular processes with little metamorphism. Toward L6, the chondrules become blurred or recrystallized, and minerals are homogenized, reflecting deep thermal metamorphism inside their asteroid. This class therefore preserves both the unaltered building blocks of the Solar System and the results of progressive parent-body processing, making L3-6 meteorites especially valuable for studying how primitive chondritic material was transformed inside asteroids over time.
