A stunning example of an iridescent ammonite fossil of the species Caloceras johnstoni from North Somerset, UK.

The fossil contains a partial ammonite that measures 100 mm (3.9 inches) across and sits in the original limestone shale matrix in which it was found that measures 152 mm (6 inches) across. 

The piece of ammonite shell is very well preserved and shows some beautiful iridescence with the colours changing as the viewing angle changes. There are flashes of deep green, gold, and red in the shell and it has a wonderful sheen. These are some of the richest colours possible in these fossils and it looks like a beautiful gemstone.

The matrix has a cut-flat base to allow it to be displayed freely standing and the whole piece weighs 275 grams.

These fossils are highly sought after and are preserved in the same way as the famous Canadian "ammolite" ammonites that are turned into valuable gemstones. 

Around 200 million years old, this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
