This is a “tame-usuki” model that uses the tame-nuri technique to allow the underlying fox painting to show through. It features an evocative design depicting a fox against a full moon.
The fox and moon are rendered using the “tame-usuki” technique. To depict the white fur, simply applying silver powder to the motifs drawn with “tame-usuki” would cause that area to stand out too much. Therefore, after drawing the fox with “tame-usuki,” a translucent amber-colored lacquer is applied over the entire surface to create a soft, three-dimensional effect. Additionally, silver powder is sprinkled on the abdomen and the tip of the tail to represent the white fur. The pampas grass is rendered using yako-maki-e (glow-in-the-dark lacquer work) to add depth.
On the handle, fox footprints are also depicted using the tsumori-kashi technique.
*What is “Tame-Toshi”?
This is a technique used during the middle coat stage of the “Tame-nuri” method—which involves applying vermilion lacquer as the middle coat and a highly transparent vermilion-mixed lacquer as the top coat—
where maki-e is applied over the vermilion before the top coat is applied.
Over time, the lacquer becomes more transparent, allowing the vermilion and maki-e to shine through, creating a truly exquisite piece with a rich, aged character."
