On
offer is a nice example of a vintage Gillette Aristocrat closed comb
one piece safety razor with a with butterfly opening mechanism. I
think this dates from the 1950s, and may be the #66 model. It comes
in its original case, and has the remains of the card outer box. I'm
not a collector of vintage razors so I may be wrong on the details -
please feel free to correct me if I am. Please
look carefully at all the pictures as they form part of the item
description.
The
razor measures approx 8cm in length, and the weight is about 73 gms.
The mechanism works smoothly, and when the handle end is turned the
doors open and close smoothly. It is stamped under the blade tray
with the Gillette diamond logo, and "Made In England".
Inside the blade tray is stamped "Patent Pending". There is
no blade fitted in the razor.
The
razor is in really nice condition, but has some very light marking
from use. It is a little grubby from storage so would benefit from a
clean. None of this detracts but is best mentioned to avoid any
disappointment.
The
leather (or faux leather) covered case measures about 9.5cm x 8cm x
3.5cm. It has the name "Gillette" on the lid in silver
lettering. Inside the base of the case is lined with green velvet,
and the lid is lined with a silky fabric. The lid opens and closes
smoothly, but the hinge is loose and doesn't snap shut. There are
signs of age and wear to the lid.
The
remains of the card outer box are tatty, but it's still nice to have
them. On one side is printed "Made in England Contents Protected
By Brit Pat Nos 646,972, 694,094, 694,333 & 687,134".
Despite
any cosmetic faults this is still a nice vintage razor that would
enhance any collection.
