This outstanding, 19th century Sioux outfit is thread sewn by hand and is made of soft, smoke tanned buckskin. It features extensive and matching stylized, floral designs on both the Vest and the Pants the Outfits is simply a stunning display piece. The Outfit is sized for a youth – a young teenage Brave – certainly not a child but also not sized for an adult.
Included is a wonderful, Vest that features hide front panels and neckline and a brown velvet back panel. The front panels and the neckline are all one piece and the panels feature dazzling, floral designs using multi-colored quills The vest closure features early, gutta percha buttons and hand cut button holes and the back of the vest retains the original velvet “belt” that could be used to tighten or loosen the fit. The Vest measures approx. 19” long and 14” across the chest. It is lined with an early, relatively thick, brown, muslin type, polished cotton.
tThe Trousers are made of a matching, smoke tanned hide and measure 33” long and has a 24” waist. The front of the Pants feature stylized floral quillwork at the upper thighs that match the floral designs on the Vest. There is also a row of quilled stars running down the outer edges of the legs. The legs are trimmed with a hand cut, rawhide fringe and thewre is a heavy muslin hem at the bottom of each leg. The Trousers are open from the center of the waist to the crotch almost like chaps and the closures are a combination of early, engraved metal and early gutta percha buttons. There are 2 pockets on the back side of the Trousers each with matching floral design quillwork. There is a short, hide tightening belt on the back of the waist similar to that found on the back of the Vest.

This very rare and simply fantastic, ca1880’s Sioux Quill Decorated Indian Scout Outfit is in very good condition. All of the hide elements are well preserved and sound with age appropriate surface soiling as can be seen in the scans below and with a couple of very short tears in the area of the crotch of the Trousers. There is no other physical damage and no repairs of any kind. The hide is soft and supple and there is no cracking or stiffening. The quillwork is beautiful but there is age appropriate, scattered losses to the quills as can also be seen in the scans below. Both the Vest and the Pants are complete and all elements are original.
