The Picpus Cemetery plays a key role in Franco-American diplomatic relations. Since the United States' entry into World War I in 1917, American and French delegations have chosen this symbolic place to pay homage to Lafayette, hero of the American Revolutionary War. It was in front of this tomb that the famous historic phrase was uttered on July 4, 1917: "Lafayette, we are here!".
