Since 1787, JJ Fox & Co has been London's premier Tobacconist, and the longest standing as far as I know. I've said it many times that they must have had incredible relationships with the old English pipe firms of the day as it always seems they were on the receiving end of many of the firm's finest offerings! That's certainly the case here with this rather rare Barling Guinea-Grain, and I can only imagine the Gent who originally walked into JJ Fox right around 1953 or so when the GG was first released, saw this in the case and thought "Wow, a bent Barling L with a new grade/finish??!!". "Sir, excuse, um, Sir, may I please see that Barling in the case?". "Why yes, it's Barling's newest offering called a Guinea Grain, meant to mimic the golden sheen found on coins, and you certainly have good taste and an eye my friend as you know Barling doesn't offer very many bents!". Something like that would have been the conversation overheard at the time! This beauty again is an "L" designation, part of the sizing Barling used for many decades and was usually about a Group 3 or 4 which is the case here with this shape reminding me of a Dunhill 656 a bit but with a longer shank. The bowl is perfectly formed with lovely dual taper, thick walls and a hearty chamber for its size. Transition is effortless to the aforementioned swooping Swan Neck half bent shank that meets the original vulcanite saddle stem complete with Barling Cross logo and "Barling Design" stamp seen underneath. The finish is dazzling as always on Guinea Grains with the briar showing off 360 degree layers and layers of straight and flame! A rare specimen from Barling indeed over 70 years old probably, this one's ready to enjoy!

Restoration Methods: I have been restoring pipes for 17 years and have taken bits and pieces from many guys whom I consider the best there ever was in the business and built upon it with my own experience and tricks of the trade. Each pipe is first cleaned by removing all cake, making the chamber smooth and round again if necessary, removing all gunk in the shank and stem with alcohol, then exterior cleaning and polishing of the stummel and stem with no oxidation left but at the same time leaving the vulcanite or acrylic and any logos intact. My restorations end with the pipe looking like new and being completely free from previous signs of use. I do not use salt/alcohol treatments in my bowls but rather if the pipe smells of prior tobacco I will put it in my ozone chamber to make neutral. Lastly, many guys ask me "how are your pipes so shiny!!??" I lightly use the fluffy edge of my white diamond buffing wheel to clean and restore stummels which removes all grime and oils while restoring the original factory luster. I then hand buff and finish with a flannel wheel with high quality carnauba applying multiple coats as they do at the factory as well. This results in the pipe looking as new and will keep it's finish with a simple terry cloth hand buffing at home. Enjoy!
