Brakner was by far one of the greatest pipe makers of all time, and I say that with much conviction. Peter Micklson originally started like many others at the Suhr workshop alongside Sixten Ivarsson. Learning from Poul Rasmussen, he went off on his own and started making pipes under the Brakner name and immediately gained much success and international recognition as in 1955 the World Pipe Smoking Championship was won smoking a Brakner! Brakner was instrumental in the success of Danish pipes in the U.S. and one of the first to be considered high grade briars. He developed the micro-rustication technique seen here and dubbed it "Antique". Many of his shapes are unique yet very well known for being exceptional smokers. Unfortunately Brakner only ever told one person about how he rusticated pipes, Kai Nielsen's mother, but both her and Brakner passed away before divulging the technique to anyone. Many have tried to replicate it over the years, some have come close, but none have truly succeeded. Even Larsen where Brakner's pipes were sold came out with their "Rustic" which was very similar but again just not the same. Brakner left a legacy of incredible pipes behind for us to enjoy like this classic shape 103 that supposedly was made in 1955 as this was the only year he made the "Deluxe Bruyere" seen here, an early piece indeed. Though he made really unique shapes as previously mentioned unlike any other, he also made true neo-classics like this Billiard that reminds me of a Dunhill LBS or 196! About a Group 5, it offers a perfectly formed bowl with thick walls, smooth rounded rim and a healthy sized chamber. It feels absolutely perfect in hand while the transition is crisp to a muscular round shank that is somewhat long and extends to meet the original also long vulcanite stem with signature green dot logo and straight bit. If you know Brakner pipes, you know his stems are about the most comfortable stems ever made! The finish is dark and the micro rustication amazing with golden brown accents and the texture in hand phenomenal! This pipe appears to have only seen light use, super clean and ready to enjoy. If you haven't treated yourself to a Brakner or want to add another to your collection, this early 103 is an absolute gem!

Restoration Methods: I have been restoring pipes for 17 years and have taken bits and pieces from many guys whom I consider the best there ever was in the business and built upon it with my own experience and tricks of the trade. Each pipe is first cleaned by removing all cake, making the chamber smooth and round again if necessary, removing all gunk in the shank and stem with alcohol, then exterior cleaning and polishing of the stummel and stem with no oxidation left but at the same time leaving the vulcanite or acrylic and any logos intact. My restorations end with the pipe looking like new and being completely free from previous signs of use. I do not use salt/alcohol treatments in my bowls but rather if the pipe smells of prior tobacco I will put it in my ozone chamber to make neutral. Lastly, many guys ask me "how are your pipes so shiny!!??" I lightly use the fluffy edge of my white diamond buffing wheel to clean and restore stummels which removes all grime and oils while restoring the original factory luster. I then hand buff and finish with a flannel wheel with high quality carnauba applying multiple coats as they do at the factory as well. This results in the pipe looking as new and will keep it's finish with a simple terry cloth hand buffing at home. Enjoy!
