The connection doubler allows two Ethernet cables to be easily routed via a CAT cable (cable sharing). This is possible because half of the wires in the network cable are not used. The connection doubler does not require power, but must always be used in pairs - one at each end of the line. The first piece combines the signals on one cable, the second piece separates them again onto normal network sockets. However, this only works if you don't use a Gigabit LAN or PoE. More wires are needed there and the trick doesn't work.
