Name:  NWA 16520

Classification: Lunar (frag. breccia)

Weight:   16.63g

Description:  Meteorite with a polished face.

Provenance:  I am the main mass holder so you have perfect provenance.

Process:  Cut and/or polished using distilled water.

Collector's Notes:  I am happy to offer this "affordable" lunar meteorite.  This lunar meteorite is part of the Bechar lunar pairing group.  Comprising this find are samples that were recovered both on the surface and buried in a hard caliche. The buried samples have some remaining salmon-beige caliche remaining on the surface and in voids.  These samples weathered differently providing a really cool display when shown together.  I also like how this tells us about the meteorite's time on Earth and allows us to think about how over time it would have been completely subsumed.

Class information:  Lunar fragmental breccias are a type of lunar meteorite formed when repeated impacts on the Moon's surface shattered existing rocks into angular fragments, which were then compacted and lithified without significant melting. They are composed of a heterogeneous mix of clasts bound together in a fine-grained matrix. Unlike impact-melt breccias, fragmental breccias lack abundant glass and unlike regolith breccias, fragmental breccias lack glass spherules or agglutinates.  This indicates the material was formed deeper than the upper few meters of the moon's surface.  These meteorites provide a direct record of the Moon's long history of bombardment, regolith turnover, and crustal mixing across different terrains.
