• The Schooner: Schooners are sometimes confused with other types of sailing ships. It is often difficult for the layman to distinguish between various types of sailing vessels. Many believe that the number of masts determines its type, but this conception is only partially true. In differentiating between types of sailing vessels, basic sail types are the primary determinant, i.e. fore and aft sails which run parallel with the ship (schooner, for example) or square sails which run across the width of a vessel (square rigger).
• A schooner is a vessel of two or more masts, all of which are fore and aft rigged. Being extremely seaworthy, the design and construction managed to combine great sturdiness with almost yacht-like beauty. From the early Dutch and French vessels which crossed the Atlantic to fish the Great Banks to the schooners made famous by the Gloucester fishermen off the New England coast, these boats served both as fast fishing vessels and freighters. Two of the most notable schooners were the Gertrude Thebaud and the Bluenose.
