A Satsuma plate from the Meiji era (1867 - 1910) This elaborate style was intended for export. In the late 1800's Japan was trying to generate income through international trade and the two things that were mostly exported were silk and porcelain. A lot of the porcelain was the usual Imari, but they also exported the more elaborate items for a higher income market.
We bought this at an Asian antiques auction in Beverly Hills in the 1980's (Unlike our other Japanese items for sale, we did not bring this from Japan) So we don't know when it made its journey to the United States from Japan. It was most likely during the Meiji era.
