Rare Antique Pewter Quart Pub Jug, W Whymark, Young Prince, Blue Anchor Rd c1830
This is a great antique pewter
quart tavern jug, fully marked and engraved with the pub name on the side along with the owners name.
This wonderful
tankard style jug has pewter touchmarks beside the handle that guarantee the
quality of the pewter, but also the verification for it being a ‘QUART’
measure. The makers touchmark is missing, although the design of this measure is identical to those produced by Loftus, Oxford Street, London. Each side of the handle it has the excise marks, below 'QUART' is a number ‘3’ possibly indicating that at some point the Edinburgh excise office had verified the
measure. There is also a City of London mark, both of these marks would have been used between 1836 when the Weights &
Measures Act came into force and 1878 when an amendment to the act bought in
standardised marks across the country with a number to indicate the authority. This style of jug was made in both the Georgian and Victorian
periods, it is difficult to date the jug as the excise marks maybe a later addition
than its manufacture, also these marks were only introduced in 1836 and were not
always adhered to. Also it has clearly travelled between various authorities through
its life with marks and engravings added over time.
The side of the jug is beautifully engraved with the name of the owner and the pub, 'W. Whymark, Young Prince, Blue Anchor Rd.' Sadly I have not been able to identify the location of the pub.
The jug is offered in good antique condition, with some undulations and rich dark patina, as you would expect with antique pewter, it measures approx. 15.5cm by 16cm at the widest point and weighs 835g.
A wonderful addition for a collector.
