Al Attles (1936-2024) is celebrated as a LIFELONG WARRIOR — a player, coach, and executive whose career highlights include leading Golden State to the 1975 NBA CHAMPIONSHIP, earning induction into the BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME in 2019, and having his No. 16 JERSEY RETIRED by the franchise. Drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors in 1960, Attles played 11 seasons as a tough defensive-minded point guard nicknamed "The Destroyer," he scored over 6,300 career points and was part of the team's relocation to San Francisco in 1962. In 1969 Attles became a PLAYER-COACH, one of the rare figures in NBA history to hold both roles simultaneously. Beginning in 1970 until 1983, Attles guided the Warriors as Head Coach, MAKING THE PLAYOFFS 6 TIMES IN A 7-YEAR SPAN, and leading Golden State to a stunning upset in sweeping the Washington Bullets in the 1975 NBA Finals, becoming ONLY THE 2ND AFRICAN-AMERICAN COACH TO WIN THE NBA FINALS. After coaching, Attles became the teams GM until 1986, and later became a Warriors' lifelong ambassador. In addition to his NBA Championship, Attles was named HEAD COACH OF THE NBA ALL-STAR GAME TWICE (1975, 1976), the Warriors retired his No. 16 Jersey in 1977 (his No. 22 Jersey was also retired by his Alma Mater, North Carolina AT&T), he was awarded the CHUCK DALY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD in 2017 for his "standard of integrity, competitive excellence, and tireless promotion" of the game, and his crowning moment was his induction into the NAISMITH MEMORIAL BASKETBALL; HALL OF FAME in the Class of 2019.
