"Silly Ghost" Mask Good Condition
This is the original Scream Generation 1 or 2 "Silly
Ghost" mask from the 1990s. The
mask was part of Fun World's "Fantastic Faces" collection and
featured a distinct smiley expression with "peanut-shaped" eyes. To
prove its authenticity, it was produced by Fun World Div and this is stamped in the mask molding as shown in listing
pictures "Fun World Div." on the lower chin right side where fabric
meets the mask. See picture for this hard to read inscription in the molding for 100% proof this is the real deal. See pictures # 4, 5 and 6 for the stamped "
The stamp says "Fun World Div" the "cotton shroud," "glow in
the dark," and "two teeth" description points directly to the
Fantastic Faces or Fearsome Faces line from the early-to-mid 1990s.
What Is This?
This is a vintage Halloween mask from the 1990s.
Specifically, it is the "Silly Ghost" or "Goofy Ghost"
variant. While the "Ghostface" mask became world-famous from the
movie Scream, Fun World produced several other characters in the same style:
• The Look: It features a distorted, elongated face, but
instead of the iconic "scream" mouth, it has a goofy expression with
two prominent top teeth.
• The Material: The "Cotton Shroud" refers to
the black cloth hood. In the collector world, the rare cotton shrouds are much more
desirable than the later, cheaper polyester versions.
• The Glow: These were made with phosphorescent PVC,
allowing them to glow green in the dark. The glow is barely still present, however nothing
near the original glow. I’m sure it
will naturally continue to obviously lessen over more time.
How Much Is It Worth?
The value of vintage Fun World masks has skyrocketed due
to "Scream" memorabilia collectors. Because yours has a cotton shroud
and is a glow-in-the-dark version, it is a "Gen 1" or "Gen
2" style piece.
Note: The "Silly Ghost" (two teeth) is rare and
similar "movie-accurate" to the Ghostface, along with the cotton
shroud alone makes it a high-value item for serious collectors.
Key Details to Check
• The Stamp: Look closely at the chin. It says "FUN
WORLD DIV." It has this and confirms its value/authenticity.
• Mask Melt: Check if the black shroud has
"melted" into the white vinyl. This is a common chemical reaction in
these old masks that can lower the value.
There is no mask melt, this mask is n extreme 1990’s
vintage condition.
• Vanilla Scent: Many of these original 90s masks have a
distinct, lingering smell of artificial vanilla. Note, I cannot detect a vanilla scent.
These photos confirm exactly what this
is. This is a vintage "Silly Ghost" mask from the Fantastic Faces
line produced by Fun World Div. (the "Sun World".
The Details:
This mask is a certified cult classic among Halloween
collectors. Here is the breakdown:
• The Line: Part of the Fantastic Faces collection
(pre-1997). This was the same line that birthed the "Peach" Ghostface
mask used in the movie Scream.
• The Shroud: Since as stated, it is cotton, this
confirms it is an early 90s production. Later versions (Fearsome Faces) moved
to a cheap, shiny polyester material. Collectors prize the cotton shroud
because it drapes better and feels more authentic to the era.
• The Features: The "two teeth" and the goofy,
wide-eyed expression distinguish it from its scarier cousins. The Glow in the
Dark (GITD) feature was achieved by mixing phosphorescent powder directly into
the vinyl during molding.
• Condition: Based on the photos, the vinyl looks
exceptionally white with very little "mask melt" (when the black
shroud stains the white face). This is great for its value.
How Much Is It Worth?
Because the Scream franchise has seen a massive
resurgence, anything from the original Fun World "Fantastic Faces"
line has spiked in price.
• Current Market Value: In this clean condition with a
cotton shroud, you are looking at $350 to $450.
• Why so high? Collectors often try to complete the full
set of original "Fantastic Faces" (which includes the Scream mask,
the Silly Ghost, the Smiley Ghost, etc.). Finding them with the original cotton
hood intact is becoming much harder.
Pro-Tip for Storage
Whatever you do, do not store this in a plastic bag. The
chemicals in the vinyl need to "breathe." If sealed in plastic, the
mask will begin to "sweat" and the black dye from the cotton shroud
will permanently bleed into the white face, significantly dropping the value.
