Vintage Comoy's Tradition Estate Pipe  Rhodesian / Bullcap variation  #80 Made in France Rare Circular Brand Inset

Description:

This is a beautiful example of a Comoy’s Tradition estate pipe, featuring the distinct "Made in France" nomenclature. The Tradition is one of Comoy’s most venerable lines, celebrated for its high-grade grain and classic English-style execution, even when produced in their French factories.

Design & Wood:

The pipe showcases a classic Rhodesian silhouette (often referred to as a "Bullcap" given the rounded proportions) with a twin-line nomenclature bead around the bowl. The briar features a mix of tight cross-grain and bird’s-eye, finished in the traditional walnut stain that defines this series.

Stem & Logo:

The stem features the famous "C" logo. Notably, this appears to be the three-piece inlaid C (rather than a simple stamp), which is highly sought after by collectors.

Condition Report

• Nomenclature: Clear and legible. "Comoy’s Tradition" is crisp; "Made in France" and shape "80" are well-defined.

• Bowl/Chamber: The rim shows some light carbon "lava" and darkening  but remains structurally sound. The chamber has a healthy cake layer.

• Stem: The vulcanite stem shows some minor oxidation/discoloration consistent with age. There are visible tooth marks/chatter near the bit (see photos).

READ!!! See picture # 5!!!! • Fitment Note: The stem does not sit flush against the shank. There is a slight gap when the tenon is fully inserted. This may be due to a replacement stem or slight wood expansion/contraction over time; it is being sold as-found for the collector to adjust or enjoy as a "shooter." This is the original stem and pipe. I assume any pipe aficionado can make this gap disappear. I don't want to force anything and break in the process so selling as shown, as is.

Historical Context:

Comoy’s is one of the oldest names in pipe making, established by Francois Comoy in 1825. While famously associated with London, the family maintained deep roots in Saint-Claude, France. The "Made in France" stamping on a Tradition line pipe often points to the mid-20th century era when production was shared between the London and French factories. Shape #80 is a quintessential classic shape that remains a favorite for its comfortable hand-feel and cool-smoking thick walls.

The "Made in France" stamp on a Comoy’s pipe is fantastic because it highlights the brand's dual heritage. While Comoy’s is world-famous as a quintessential London brand, it was actually founded in Saint-Claude, France, before Henri Comoy moved production to London in 1879.

Here is the additional information for estate pipe collectors:

1. The "Dual Heritage History:

This pipe represents the French roots of the Comoy family. Even after the company became the pinnacle of "London Made" pipes, they maintained their factory in Saint-Claude—the world capital of briar pipe making. A "Made in France" Tradition is often viewed as having the same high-quality engineering as its London cousins but with the classic French flair for briar selection.

2. Potential Age & Rarity

• The Transition Era: Most Comoy’s Tradition pipes seen today are "Made in London." Finding a French-stamped Tradition is less common and often dates to specific periods, such as the mid-20th century or the 1980s post-Cadogan era.

• This pipe has the sought after  Inlaid "C": The "C" on the stem is a solid, three-piece inlaid material (rather than just painted on), it is a hallmark of pre-1980s quality. Collectors specifically hunt for this because it signifies the pipe was made before the brand's production methods were simplified.

3. Specifics for Shape #80

• The "Bullcap" Aesthetic: Shape #80 is a classic Rhodesian variation, sometimes called a "Bullcap" or "Bulldog". It is prized for its thick bowl walls, which provide a cooler smoke—a detail experienced smokers look for.

• Estate Appeal: French briar from Saint-Claude is historically some of the finest in the world. This pipe is made from aged French briar, which many enthusiasts believe offers a superior "break-in" and flavor profile compared to newer wood.

"While Comoy’s is often associated with London, this rare 'Made in France' Tradition honors the brand's original 1825 roots in Saint-Claude. Collectors often seek out French-made Comoy's for their exceptional briar quality and historical significance. Featuring the classic shape #80 and the iconic inlaid 'C' logo, this is a piece of tobacco history from the world's oldest pipe-making lineage."

A Quick Note on the stem since the stem doesn't sit flush:

• "Draft Hole Alignment: Note that the stem currently has a slight gap at the mortise/tenon junction. This is a common occurrence in vintage estate pipes due to natural wood seasoning and is a simple fix for a restorer or can be enjoyed as-is by a functional smoker."
