With a passionate love of animals, especially dogs, Armfield was a prolific painter working in oils. His scenes of dogs showing their agility whether working or at play, became extremely popular among the Victorian social scenes. The son of an artist, Armfield was born in Wales and showed a talent for art under his father’s pupillage from an early age. By age 16 Armfield’s paintings were popular among Victorian society and he was in demand. Initially, he signed as G A Smith, changing to his known name when he began to exhibit professionally. Armfield entered two paintings to the British Institution in 1839, a study of a dog’s head and a terrier chasing a rabbit down a burrow. By 1840, Armfield’s work began appearing regularly in published social and field sports magazines. In 1849, Airfield began to exhibit his work at the Royal Academy and the Suffolk Street Galleries. He continued to exhibit throughout his working life. Although known mostly for his paintings of dogs, George Armfield also painted horses, rabbits, otters, deer and foxes. Many examples of his work can be seen on artprice.com, findartinfo.com, artnet.com, arcadia.com and askart.com, besides the sites of leading auction houses christies.com, sothebys.com and bonhams.com.
