May 19, 1979 ticket stub in good condition from Veterans Stadium where the 1979 Philadelphia Phillies "Saturday Night Special" uniforms were all burgundy, monochrome uniforms worn for a single game on May 19,1979. Intended for Saturday night games, they were instantly despised by players and fans for their look and poor fit and were never worn again after a 10-5 loss to the Expos.
Design Details: The uniforms consisted of maroon pants, jerseys, and hats, featuring a bright white stripe down the sides. They were notably zip-front, rather than button-down, and were considered a "fashion disaster"
The Infamous Night: On May 19, 1979, the Phillies wore them for the first and only time against the Montreal Expos. The team blew a 4-0 lead and lost 10-5.
Player Reaction: Players claimed the uniforms made them look like "giant grapes". Greg Luzinski famously vowed to be traded before wearing them again, and they were discarded immediately after the game.
The Legacy: The "Saturday Night Special" jerseys are considered a "holy grail" for collectors, with very few examples known to exist.
