ORIGINAL VINTAGE/ANTIQUE IMAGE – Fabulous image of a photographer preparing his Ansco Memo camera (early 35mm film camera).  c.1930 original 8x10 soft focus silver gelatin print.  Very rare to capture this instant in time with a photographer and such an unusual camera. 

PHOTOGRAPHER – The image captures Charles Apgar preparing his Ansco Memo.  Apgar was born in 1902 and died in 2001 at the age of 99.  He was a photographer for the Pennsylvania Game Commission.  His images were published in the Pennsylvania Game News (Game Commission periodical) and as part of photography exhibitions and competitions.  See March 1944 front cover of PA Game News.  In the late 1920s and early 1930s he immersed himself in pictorial photography and his work was featured in photographic exhibitions and salons – 1930’s in Portland Oregon, Rochester New York, and Pennsylvania.  I suspect the vast majority of his images were retained by his employer as property of the Pennsylvania Game Commission.  He earned Ph.D at the University of Pittsburgh and was Professor and chairman of the department of biology at Elizabethtown College for 1945 to 1967, instructor at the University of Pittsburgh, Research Fellow at Wistar Institute, Assistant chief of education at Cornell University School of Medicine, and Assistant quartermaster at Indiantown Gap Military Reservation.
