Offered here is the July 1947 issue of Grit and Steel — "Published in the Interest of Those Devoted to the Game Fowl" — Volume XLIX, Number 3, published in Gaffney, South Carolina. Subscription price $2.00/year, single copy 20¢.

Cover The cover features a photograph of 'Irishman' — an Irish Grey cock, 5.00, winner of two long-heel and one short-heel battles, bred by W. E. Cunningham of Columbus, Mississippi, owned by d. Sgtm. G. 3902 AAF BU, Chanute Field, Illinois. The military base ownership — Chanute Field, a major Army Air Forces technical training facility in Illinois — gives this cover bird a direct postwar military connection, adding a dimension unique in the collection.

Bill Gorman — San Antonio, Fully Established The July 1947 issue carries the fully settled Bill Gorman San Antonio advertisement — 1406 W. Huisache Ave., San Antonio 1, Texas — with the now-standard "Change in Prices" notice: all gaff patterns formerly at catalog price now $7.50; patterns formerly at $10.00 now $12.50; cocker's gaff case $3.50 postpaid. The July 1947 appearance is the eighth consecutive issue in this collection carrying the San Antonio address, confirming the full arc from Indianapolis wartime supplier to established Texas operator is complete.

Sunflower Game Club — $5,000 Holiday Main, Final Appearance The Sunflower Game Club, Ruleville, Mississippi — Bobby Manziel vs. Sam Head & Co. — $5,000 Holiday Main advertisement appears again in the July issue, now as the event is imminent — July 4 main, July 5–6 derby. Free Barbecue and Brunswick Stew July 4. For reservations write or wire Sam Head, Ruleville, Mississippi. This is the second consecutive appearance of the Sunflower advertisement across June and July, bracketing the event across both pre-event issues. Combined with the September 1946 Manziel Ruleville Prize feature, this creates a three-issue Bobby Manziel documentary thread spanning nearly a full year of the collection.

THE STANDOUT FEATURE — Pass Christian Five Entries Deadlock The centerpiece editorial feature is "Pass Christian — Five Entries Deadlock" — a full tournament score card and extended narrative report on the Pass Christian, Mississippi derby, June 7–14:

Score Card — $500.00 Derby, June 6: Complete won-lost records for all entries — Harry Murray, Memphis, Tennessee; Sunny Brown, Lexington, Mississippi; Frank Brendus, Hattiesburg, Mississippi; B. L. James, Lexington, Mississippi; William Scarpelly — five entries, complete deadlock result documented in full detail.

Score Card — $30.00 Derby, June 6: Dudley Fisher, Little Rock, Arkansas — complete with results.

Extended narrative by Volunteer covering: the tournament atmosphere; the deadlock outcome; named participants including C. D. Scott, steward of the pit; Grit and Steel representative present; C. C. Casho noted; full bout-by-bout commentary.

Accompanied by a six-image photographic spread — one of the largest photo features in the 1947 issues — documenting participants, birds, and tournament atmosphere at Pass Christian. Named in caption references: C. D. Scott; a Brown Red cock bred by his breeder; a Dominique-cross brood cock bred by his breeder; S. Casho; D. Casho; numbered birds in action.

Interior Highlights

Back Cover — Jimmy Johnson's Roundheads, 1925–1947 The back cover carries the Jimmy Johnson's Roundheads advertisement dated 1925–1947 — now with notably enlarged typography for "PROVEN BROOD FOWL, TRIO, $100.00" and "FOURTEEN DAY KEEP FOR BOTH FAST AND SLOW HEELS" — the most visually emphatic version of the Johnson back cover across the entire collection run:

Physical Description Saddle-stitched with original staples. Cover shows light wear consistent with age and storage. Interior pages fully legible throughout.

Historical Context The July 1947 issue is the peak summer tournament issue of the 1947 run. The Pass Christian deadlock feature — with its six-image photographic spread and complete score card documentation — is the most visually and statistically complete tournament record in the 1947 portion of this collection. The Sunflower $5,000 Holiday Main second appearance closes the pre-event promotional arc established in June. The Chanute Field military connection on the cover bird is a quiet but genuine postwar social document. The enlarged Johnson back cover typography marks a clear evolution in the advertisement's visual presentation across the collection run.
