The "L (Luxury)" lens achieves significant miniaturization and weight reduction for a large-aperture super-telephoto lens.

Inheriting the optical system of the "RF600mm F4 L IS USM," which achieved high mobility and high image quality, this lens achieves both compactness, lightness, and high image quality by placing a unique magnifying optical system at the rear of the body. The introduction of this extremely lightweight 1200mm focal length lens for mirrorless cameras will contribute to expanding the range of photography for users in scenes such as wildlife, aircraft, and sports.

By attaching the separately sold "Extender RF1.4×" and "Extender RF2×" (both released in 2020), which extend the focal length by 1.4x and 2x respectively, it is possible to shoot super-telephoto photography equivalent to a maximum focal length of 2400mm. AF and image stabilization functions can still be used even when the extender is attached. With the camera's increased sensitivity and the lens's longer focal length, its use in surveillance applications such as airports, ports, and rivers is also anticipated.

By employing a heat-shielding paint that enhances the reflectivity of infrared rays contained in sunlight, the lens temperature rise is suppressed even during long shooting sessions such as outdoor sports in scorching heat. In addition, dustproof and splashproof construction is adopted for the mount, switch, and focus ring*, ensuring the reliability befitting an "L (Luxury)" lens that pursues the highest level of performance.
