The Great Aqueduct: The Story of the Planning and Building of the Colorado River Aqueduct 

is a 1941 publication detailing the construction of the 242 mile-long, $220 million water system

(roughly $3.5 billion in today's dollars) designed to bring water from the Colorado River at Lake 

Havasuto Southern California. Built by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California 

between 1933 and 1941, this project was essential for the expansion of Los Angeles and 

surrounding areas, employing 35,000 workers during the Great Depression.
