This is a rare classic all original 1:25th scale metallic silver 1961 Ford Thunderbird hardtop promotional car made by AMT. These promo cars were given away at Ford dealerships to customers who would stop in the dealer during the fall of 1960 through the summer of 1961 to test drive and hopefully buy a new Thunderbird. Others were mailed by Ford to owners of 1960 T-birds to show them what the newly redesigned ones looked like. Still others were sold in hobby shops, department stores, and toy stores during that same time period. The whole car is molded in gray. The body was then factory sprayed with a clear coat containing tiny metallic specks. The resulting color matches "Silver Gray Poly" which was available on the real cars. This car is rare for two reasons. During 1961 AMT began making promos out of the newer cycolac plastic that does not warp. This is one of those non warping cycolac cars. Many 61 Thunderbirds were made of the old acetate plastic that warped. Also, This silver color is seldom seen. Most cycolac 61's were tan. Ford used the tan one as the mailer.
This car is in great lightly used / displayed condition. The fairly shiny factory sprayed body is still nice. There some marks on the roof, hood, and driver's side where the metallic finish is thin due to box rub, light handling and minimal display time. Other than that, the body is free of noticeable blemishes. Both windshield and vent posts remain complete, intact, and straight. The shiny clear craze free glass is still nice. The chrome on the bumpers and hubcaps shows no noticeable bleed-through anywhere. The matching grey interior, with silver factory painted seat inserts, is still perfect. The glass and interior have never been out of the car. The factory melted gray washers holding them to the underside of the body are still intact. The gray molded plastic chassis is still nice. All four black vinyl wide white-wall tires roll freely and straight on partially rust coated metal axles. The original box is not included.
A rare vintage 65 year old dealer promotional item in this great condition is a must for any Ford, Thunderbird, Promotional, or 1:24th / 1:25th model fan or collector who seeks the rarest and best available. You will not see a nicer example of this seldom seen car.
