Item: 1919 5 Rubles

Country: Russia (Northwest, Yudenich)

Pick #: S205b

Watermark: Laid paper lines

Description: Issued by General Nikolai Yudenich, commander of the Northwestern Army, and circulated on the territories of the short-lived Regional Government of Northwest Russia. This money was printed in Stockholm, Sweden and was highly valued by the people due to backing by Admiral Kolchak’s gold reserves and the promise to exchange the notes for official government currency once Petrograd (imperial capital of Russia, now Saint Petersburg) was taken back by the White Army. The Petrograd campaign was ultimately a failure and led to the dissolution of the Northwestern Army.

The banknotes were colloquially known as Yudenki (юденьки) due to the prominent signature of General Yudenich, Wings (крылатки) due to the image of an eagle spreading its wings on the back, and Petrogradki (петроградки) due to the Petrograd exchange promise printed on the notes themselves.

Condition: Extremely Fine (estimated), glue remains on the obverse
