Rare & Elegant Antique Dutch Amstel Porcelain Hand-Gilded Tea Bowl, c1785

The production of porcelain in Amsterdam began to compete with the import of Chinese and European porcelain. The most significant porcelain was produced during the late 18th century, with notable factories operating in the Amsterdam area and nearby Hague.

The mark for the Amstel porcelain factory, a Dutch porcelain manufacturer near Amsterdam, was transferred from Vicar de Mol porcelain manufactury at Oude Loosdrecht, later transferred to Oude Amstel in 1784. Many of the highly skilled employees moved with the factory. In 1809 the factory was moved to Nieuwer Amstel. To begin with the products from the Amstel factory were marked with the word Amstel in underglaze blue in the early days, other colours were later used. Porcelain was no longer made after 1809. During this last period of the Amstel factory until it closed in 1814, no more porcelain was produced. The factory was closed in 1814 and this was also the end of the Dutch porcelain production. Amstel porcelain is characterized by its refined decoration, often featuring elaborate hand-painted landscapes, floral patterns, and gilding. Amstel porcelain is now recognized for its historical significance in the Dutch decorative arts, with surviving pieces found in major museums and private collections throughout the world.

This is a gorgeous porcelain tea bowl manufactured in c1785 by the Dutch porcelain factory Amstel, who were active between 1784 – 1809.

This elegant porcelain tea bowl is decorated with hand-gilded leaf motifs and is edged at the rim and the foot with a broad gilt band. It has a single gilt leaf on the inner base.

The tea bowl is marked 'Amstel' in underglaze grey. It has a rim diameter 9cm by 4.7cm tall.

The bowl has an imperfection on one side, it is a firing fault appearing to be a burst bubble or similar, there are no chips or crackes. It has some minor age related wear.
