Description

This is a nice, almost uncirculated, “Cinq” or “5 Zaires” note from the “Republic of Zaïre.” It is dated May 20, 1979.

Zaïre was a Congolese State from 1971 to 1997 in Central Africa. It was previously, and is now again, known as the “Democratic Republic of the Congo.”

It pictures Mobutu Sese Seko who ruled Zaire from 1965 to 1997, transforming the nation into a personal fiefdom through a brutal kleptocracy or “Government by Thieves.” Amassing a $5 billion fortune while his people faced hyperinflation, he became famous for his signature leopard-skin toque and a forced "authenticity" campaign. Though a key U.S. ally during the Cold War, his support vanished with the fall of the Soviet Union. Ousted by a 1997 rebellion led by Laurent Kabila, Mobutu fled into exile and died of prostate cancer in Morocco just months later.

In October of 1974 Mobutu hosted “The Rumble in the Jungle” heavyweight title fight between Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) and George Foreman. That was the fight Ali used the famous "Rope-a-Dope" tactic. He leaned against the ropes and let Foreman exhaust himself with heavy punches for seven rounds. In the 8th round, Ali saw his opening and knocked the exhausted Foreman out, reclaiming the heavyweight title.

The Note: Still crispy, almost uncirculated, it has some wrinkles and bends, and a tiny edge split in the bottom edge. No other tears or holes. The note will be sent in a new large currency holder that protects it. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
