🥢 History of Chopsticks in Japan (Quick Overview)

Chopsticks have been used in Japan for more than a millennium.

The most widely accepted theory is that they were introduced from China around 1,400 years ago, during the Sui dynasty. Before that, meals in Japan were mainly eaten by hand.

Japanese envoys known as Kenzuishi brought back many aspects of Chinese culture, including the custom of dining with chopsticks. Influential statesman Prince Shōtoku promoted their use at the imperial court so Japan could properly host official guests from China.

Within about a century, chopsticks had spread across the entire Japanese population. Over time, Japan developed its own unique chopstick style—most notably the thin, tapered tips, designed to make it easier to pick apart delicate fish dishes, an essential part of Japanese cuisine.

From ancient times to the present day, chopsticks remain one of the most familiar and beloved symbols of Japanese culture.
