Description
This is a quite scarce, old, "Good For 50¢ In Merchandise" token from the old "Pearce Mercantile Company" of the now long gone "Ghost Town" of Pearce, Arizona. Please see the map below.
The old “Pearce Mercantile” store is now on the National Register of Historic Buildings. It was built in 1896 and was an integral part of the pioneering history of the southwest. Ranchers, farmers, cowboys, and homesteaders obtained their supplies from this two-story adobe structure. It issued these tokens from as early as 1905 until at least 1911.
Legend has it that Jimmie Pearce discovered a rich gold vein by accident one day in 1894. His discovery led to the development of the Commonwealth Mine and Pearce, Arizona. Between 1894 and the 1930's, $30,000,000 in ore was mined. It is said that the gold bars were sometimes made intentionally heavy, so that thieves wouldn’t be able to rob the gold shipments. The gold ran out and so did the residents of Pearce in the 1930's.
Weight: 11.62 Grams, 381 Millimeters, Brass.
"Arizona Trade Tokens 2010" by Peter Spooner. (Me) #PEA-665d.
