Here are some facts about pressed pennies, also known as elongated or smashed pennies:
- How they're made
A penny or dime is squeezed between two rollers that are set very close together, flattening it and embossing it with a new design. One of the rollers has an engraved image that appears on the penny, and a reverse-engraved crank creates high relief engravings that stand out from the surface. The penny can go through the rollers under over 3,000 pounds of pressure. Penny presses can be hand-cranked or electric.
- History
The idea of pressing pennies originated in Europe in 1833, but it became popular in the United States after the 1893 Columbian World's Fair in Chicago. Penny presses are often found in tourist attractions like museums, amusement parks, and landmarks. They became popular at Walt Disney World in 1994, and today there are over 750 pressed coin designs available at the resort.
- Collectibility
Pressed pennies are often used as souvenirs or commemorative tokens, and they can be highly collectible. Double-sided pressed pennies, also known as "mules", are even rarer and more desirable. Some collectors make it a mission to get as many different designs as possible. As of December 2023, Dimitri Ramoutar of Brooklyn, New York held the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of pressed pennies with 1,584.
