- The Crusades: Iron Men and Saints is Harold Lambs classic narrative history of the medieval Crusades.
- Issued in English as a hardcover by The New Home Library of New York in the United States, this edition was first published in September 1942 and reprinted in October 1942 from the original 1930 copyright.
- The book opens with a foreword that describes the great migration at the end of the Dark Ages and introduces the idea of the crusade as a voyage of God.
- The main text is organized in four parts beginning with Barbarians and Darkness and moving through Byzantium, the road to Antioch, the capture of Jerusalem, and campaigns beyond the sea.
- Chapter titles such as The Iron Men, Chivalry, The Kneeling Tower, The First Foothold, and Bohemunds Crusade highlight the blend of character study and battle narrative.
- Later chapters and an afterword trace the outcome of the First Crusade and the longer legacy of crusading in the medieval Mediterranean world.
- Extensive notes sections discuss topics including the numbers of the crusaders, Urban and the crusade, the case against the Basileus, Greek fire, the legends, and the tales of Ousama.
- Back matter also provides a selected bibliography and index for further study of people, places, and events of the crusading age.
- The volume is illustrated with black and white line drawings, decorative chapter headings, and medieval style vignettes of knights, saints, and seals.
- Bound in red cloth with black ornamental borders, a New Home Library globe and open book device on the front cover and title page, and a contrasting spine panel titled The Crusades Harold Lamb, this vintage history will appeal to readers of medieval and military history.
• Condition: This vintage 1942 red cloth hardcover history shows some cover and page age fading and toning and handling, but remains a solid, complete collectible and study volume. The red boards, with no dust jacket present, display overall fading most pronounced at the spine, along with scattered light and dark spots, a larger area of light discoloration near the upper rear board, a few small white specks on the front and rear, and modest rubbing and soft bumping at the corners and spine ends. The binding is secure and the text block sits square, opening easily without weakness. Endpapers are heavily age toned with a vertical band of darker offsetting and a small penciled numeral at the upper corner, while interior pages are evenly toned with the occasional small spot but are generally clean, free of underlining or highlighting, and fully legible throughout, including the illustrations, notes, bibliography, and index. No loose or missing pages and no odors.
