This is a beautiful example of the Russian lacquer box, a traditional craft originating from the late 18th century. It is constructed from papier-mâché, which is boiled in linseed oil, baked, and polished to a high sheen. The box features a hand-painted miniature scene, often depicting folk tales, fairy tales, or landscapes. The scenes are painted with extremely fine brushes, sometimes using gold leaf for borders and intricate details. Such boxes typically come from one of four historical villages: Fedoskino, Palekh, Kholui, or Mstera.
