The Gerber Silver Eagle Series (designed by Al Mar) and later known as Silver Knight, began in 1972 when Gerber met Mr. Sakae Wada, a knife enthusiast and distributor in Osaka, Japan.
Initially, Gerber struggled to find a single manufacturer in Japan capable of producing the knives to their quality standards. Mr. Wada, however, persisted and in 1976 introduced Gerber to the Sakai family, who were interested in the project.
They established the first complete folding knife factory in Japan, named Gerber/Sakai Homono, under Mr. Wada’s supervision. They also secured the exclusive use of Ginghami No. 1 stainless steel, which was heat-treated to a hardness of Rockwell 58-60C, resulting in blades with exceptional edge retention. This collaboration marked a significant milestone in producing high-quality knives in Japan.
The Silver Knight series of knives, crafted by Gerber, date back to the 1980s and early 1990s. However, not all series were produced within this time frame. Variations include handles made from wood, mother of pearl, abalone, stainless steel, and bone.
