The I*XL Story began almost two and ahalf centuries ago with the founding of the George Wostenholm Company — a small cutlery factory located near Sheffield, England which grew to be one of the most important and respected cutlery firms in the world.
The business established by the first George Wostenholm in 1745 and carried on by his successors in the Wostenholm family always demanded and achieved a high level of quality in their products. As a result the firm grew and prospered and their I*XL "Maker's Mark" came to the attention of the entire world but especially to America which eventually became the company's largest market.
One of the best known I*XL knives in American history was the one made famous by Jim Bowie and which is now on exhibit at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.
I*XL knives also served throughout the Civil War as evidenced by numerous historic samples and prominent coverage is given to I*XL in the history that knives played in the founding of America. In the disruptive years between two World Wars, I*XL all but disappeared from the American scene and those still available became sought after collectors items.
After many years of absence the original George Wostenholm Company and it's I*XL mark were re-introduced through the cooperation and sponsorship of the Schrade Cutlery Corp. of New York.
The first Schrade I*XL knife introduced was a limited edition produced to commemorate the granting of the I*XL "Maker's Mark" to George Wostenholm by the Sheffield Cutlers Guild in the year 1787.
This commemorative knife was handcrafted in Sheffield to recreate the original legendary cutlery and is accompanied by a "Certificate of Origin" and registration slip.
