What this part controls

The handbrake lever applies the parking brake via cables to hold the vehicle stationary when parked. A healthy ratchet and lever action is important for safety and MOT readiness.

Common fault symptoms

  • Handbrake will not hold (weak ratchet / worn mechanism)
  • Excessive lever travel / poor adjustment range
  • Button sticking or lever not releasing smoothly
  • Parking brake warning switch faults (if present on your model)
